Hardware looks like a commodity and behaves like one until a finish or a tolerance is specified, at which point the price moves. Screws, brackets, hinges and fittings are cheap per unit and expensive per mistake, because a defective batch of ten thousand is discovered by the customer rather than in inspection. In practice the answer is almost always yes for a lawful physical product, and the useful question is which process and at what volume. For this category: 10,000+ pieces for a cold-formed or headed custom fastener, because the dies are cheap but the set-up is per-run and the machines run fast.
