Private label means putting your own brand on a product that already exists, which is the fastest and cheapest route to a branded product. The product itself is the easy part; the work is in the packaging, the labelling compliance for the destination market, and the barcode, and those are the three things that delay a launch when they are left until the end. In practice the answer is almost always yes for a lawful physical product, and the useful question is which process and at what volume. Branding an existing item can start at a few hundred units; custom printed packaging pushes it to 1,000+; a custom product colour or shape is a new tool and follows the tooling minimum instead. What goes wrong with retail-ready private label goods
- Printing the packaging before confirming the destination labelling requirement, then paying for a reprint.
- Assuming the factory will generate the barcode. GS1 registration is the brand owner's job.
- Buying a "custom" product that is actually a stock item with a sticker on it — sometimes fine, but you should know which you bought.
- Forgetting the responsible-person address required for EU sales.
- Not checking that the factory will not also supply your design to someone else; exclusivity has to be negotiated and paid for.
